Most large hiring drives start with an online aptitude test. It is the first filter, so strong preparation here decides whether anyone reads your resume or interviews you. The good news is that aptitude is a skill you can build in a few weeks with steady practice.

## Typical sections

- **Quantitative aptitude:** percentages, ratio, profit and loss, time and work, averages, number series.
- **Logical reasoning:** puzzles, seating arrangement, coding-decoding, blood relations, data sufficiency.
- **Verbal ability:** grammar, reading comprehension, sentence correction and vocabulary.
- **Technical or coding (for IT roles):** basic programming, data structures and SQL.

Tests such as the [TCS iON NQT](https://latestindiajobs.com/tcs-ion-nqt-national-qualifier-test-guide) combine several of these, and company drives listed under [off campus drives](/category/off-campus-drives) often use similar formats.

## A four-week study plan

**Week 1: Foundations.** Revise basic arithmetic, percentages and ratios. Do 20 questions a day. Learn the formulas and write them on one page.

**Week 2: Reasoning.** Practise puzzles and arrangements. Time yourself. Accuracy matters more than speed at the start.

**Week 3: Verbal and mixed sets.** Read one editorial daily, practise grammar questions and take two sectional tests.

**Week 4: Full mocks.** Take a full-length mock test every two days and review every wrong answer. Note the topic and the reason you missed it.

## Practical tips

- Skip a question that takes more than 90 seconds, and come back to it.
- Check whether there is negative marking before guessing.
- Practise on a laptop with the same screen setup you will use in the real test.
- Sleep well the night before. A tired mind makes silly mistakes.

## Quantitative aptitude: what to focus on

Start with the topics that appear most often and that you can improve quickly.

- **Percentages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest:** these are mostly formula-based and give fast marks once you practise them.
- **Ratio, proportion and averages:** learn shortcuts such as component method and weighted averages.
- **Time, speed and distance, time and work:** convert each problem into a rate, and many questions become simple.
- **Number system and series:** learn divisibility rules, squares up to 30 and cubes up to 15, because these save time.
- **Data interpretation:** practise reading tables and charts quickly. Estimation often saves more time than exact calculation.

Build a formula notebook and revise it daily for five minutes. Many students lose marks not because they are weak, but because they forget formulas under pressure.

## Logical reasoning: how to improve

Reasoning questions follow patterns. After a few weeks of practice, you will recognise them quickly.

- **Arrangements and puzzles:** draw a table or diagram every time. Do not keep it in your head.
- **Syllogisms and statements:** use simple Venn diagrams.
- **Coding-decoding and series:** write letter positions (A=1 to Z=26) at the top of your rough sheet.
- **Blood relations and directions:** draw a family tree or a compass sketch.
- **Data sufficiency:** check whether each statement alone answers the question before you combine them.

## Verbal ability and English

Recruiters value communication, so verbal sections are not optional.

1. Read one newspaper editorial or a long article daily and note five new words with their meaning.
2. Revise basic grammar: tenses, subject-verb agreement, prepositions and articles.
3. For reading comprehension, read the questions first, then scan the passage for answers.
4. For sentence correction, read the sentence aloud in your head. If it sounds wrong, check the grammar rule.

## Coding and technical sections

For software and IT roles, expect questions on a programming language, data structures, SQL and output prediction. Choose one language such as Python, Java or C++ and go deep. Practise arrays, strings, sorting, searching and basic recursion. For SQL, learn SELECT, WHERE, GROUP BY, JOIN and subqueries. Review job descriptions on our [IT jobs](/category/it-jobs) page to see which technologies employers ask for.

## Time management in the real test

- Do a quick scan of the paper and begin with sections you are strong in.
- Allot a fixed time per section and move on when it ends, if sections are timed.
- Mark difficult questions and return to them at the end.
- Keep five minutes for review, to avoid avoidable errors such as marking the wrong option.
- Stay calm after a hard question. One bad question should not affect the next.

## Mock tests and error analysis

Mock tests are useful only if you analyse them. After each test, write down every wrong or skipped question with the reason: concept gap, silly mistake, time pressure or misread. Revise the concept, then attempt similar questions the next day. Over two weeks, you should see the number of silly mistakes drop. Track your score and accuracy in a simple sheet so that you can see progress.

## Online test rules

Most companies use remote or centre-based proctoring. Keep a valid ID, a stable internet connection and a quiet room. Do not open other tabs, and keep your phone away. Read the instructions on cameras, microphones and screen sharing in advance, and run the system check that many platforms provide. Technical errors are often caused by browsers and permissions, so test them a day earlier.

## Where to use your preparation

Once your basics are strong, apply widely. Our [off campus drives](/category/off-campus-drives) page lists current openings, and the [TCS iON NQT guide](https://latestindiajobs.com/tcs-ion-nqt-national-qualifier-test-guide) explains a test whose score many companies accept. ## FAQ

**How long does it take to prepare for an aptitude test?**
Most freshers need three to four weeks of daily practice, depending on their starting level.

**Is aptitude more important than coding?**
For many companies, you must clear the aptitude section first. Strong coding then helps in later rounds.
